TRUSTED BY THESE WELL KNOWN BRANDS AND HUNDREDS MORE.
Leigh Hunt (1784-1859) is a key figure in the golden age of English poetry. As an editor of various periodicals, he championed the work of Keats, Byron and Shelley. He became a trusty friend of these great romantic writers, as well as such luminaries as Lamb and Bentham. Born the son of a poor clergyman, his first book of poems appeared when he was 23. He was also an essayist and critic who suffered in the cause of free speech. For libelling the Prince Regent, he was imprisoned along with his brother for two years. His knack for detecting talent has probably overshadowed his own poetry. Nevertheless, Abou Ben Adhem, (that worthy chap who awoke ‘from a deep dream of sleep’), is his best-known poem and a stalwart of popular anthologies.
